Oil Seal

What Is an Oil Seal?

An oil seal is a component that seals the gap between a rotating shaft and its housing, preventing lubricant leakage and blocking dust and moisture from outside. A rubber lip runs in contact with the shaft, so it is used exclusively for rotary motion. Material — NBR, FKM, silicone, etc. — is selected by media and temperature.

Principle & Structure

A rubber lip is vulcanized to a metal case, with a garter spring wrapped behind it to maintain constant radial load against the shaft. The primary lip retains lubricant; where a secondary (dust) lip is present, it additionally excludes external dirt and moisture. Cases come in bare-metal-OD and rubber-covered-OD styles, chosen to suit the housing material and bore finish.

Key Features

Garter spring maintains consistent contact force despite shaft wear or eccentricity
Primary lip (oil retention) can be combined with a secondary lip (contaminant exclusion)
Metal-OD or rubber-covered-OD case options matched to housing material
Standard designs have defined limits for shaft speed, eccentricity and pressure — special designs cover higher-speed or higher-pressure duty

Shape Types & Applications

Features
The most widely used type, with a spring built into the lip. TC is exposed with a dust lip; SC is enclosed without one.
Spring-loaded lip; packing grease between the lips allows operation even without lubricating oil.
No spring; fitted with a dust lip to block dirt and sand ingress.
Springless seal lip, sometimes assembled together with TC/TB types. Not suitable for excessive peripheral speed or eccentricity.
Spring-loaded lip with a reinforcing ring that reduces lip deformation. TA has a dust lip, SA does not.
Spring-loaded with two seal lips facing opposite directions to separate two different fluids.
Lip design: TCV has a shorter, stiffer lip that prevents excessive contact pressure buildup, with the spring positioned lower along the axis for more effective lip support — a high-pressure design. TCN adds a reinforcing ring that reduces lip deformation.
A split (cut) oil seal for rotating shafts where the shaft or equipment is difficult to disassemble, fitted using a hook-joint spring at the sealing element. Because of its split construction, sealing performance is somewhat lower than other types.

TCV·TCN 수치는 순간 최고(서지)압력 기준입니다.* Pressure values are for reference — actual allowable pressure varies by manufacturer/specification, shaft rotation speed, operating temperature and installation conditions. TCV/TCN figures represent momentary peak (surge) pressure.
